QUESTION: Should I have spinal fusion surgery?

First of all, we have to remember that surgeons specialize in surgery, so they almost always consider it to be the best choice. Since they are very skilled engineers, they are great at physically straightening the spine with the help of metal hardware. In most cases, after surgery the body will look taller and straighter. But the big question is, how will it feel?

In almost all cases, people experience some kind of discomfort with a fusion - ranging from general stiffness to disabling chronic pain. There are also some folks who never feel any discomfort ever! Every body, curve and rotation is completely unique, not to mention lifestyles vary greatly, so it is impossible to compare one surgery with another; one person with another.

So how to decide?

The quick answer is to take time to try everything possible before deciding on surgery with these three steps.

  1. Where possible, get at least two opinions from two different surgeons, and ask many questions. Make sure you understand the procedures they are recommending.

  2. Learn as much as possible about your particular curve pattern and learn to visualize it and breathe into it. This is an extremely important step in learning to manage your own condition, empowering you to find solutions on your own.

  3. Explore scoliosis-specific exercises and supportive care approaches to learn about your particular curve and how to keep yourself as balanced and fit as possible. You can find many suggestions on the TOPS website.
