Workshops

TOPS offers a variety of workshops in Vancouver, on Vancouver Island at OHM Centre, and in various other locations throughout North America and beyond. Our workshops provide a safe, non-judgmental space that is open to everyone. No previous experience is required. In an effort to include all, many of our workshop fees are open to sliding-scale payment based on the participant's need – please contact us about the workshop you're specifically interested in. 

Classes are led by TOPS associates who are experienced working with people with back issues, particularly scoliosis. Our team of associates includes yoga, Pilates and dance instructors, life coaches, physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractors and Tension and Trauma Release (TRE) providers.

‘SCOLIOSIS SATURDAYS’ -
WITH MARTHA CARTER

Martha will be teaching ‘Somatic Yoga for Scoliosis and Fusions’, a blend of gentle yet deep foundational movements using Essential Somatics, Yoga for Scoliosis, and more.

Yoga for Scoliosis and Fusions offers a gentle approach for scoliotic spines that helps people breathe into their concavities, decompress their curves, derotate their twists, repattern their imbalances, reinforce new patterns, strengthen and stabilize weak areas, and in general feel better about their backs!

Somatics is a very gentle, and pleasurable approach to movement that leads to pain-free mobility. Based on the teachings of philosopher and movement theorist, Thomas Hanna, Somatics exercises are easy to enjoy for all levels and abilities, and it can be very effective very quickly.

NOTE: Classes will be recorded and available to all registrants for two weeks following each class.


‘Gentle Sunday YOGA’ -

Join us for these weekend classes with Scoliosis and Spinal Fusion expert, Martha Carter. Open to everyone, at any level.

‘Gentle Sunday Yoga’ is a stimulating Sunday starter! This class is gentle yet just the right amount of challenge for all levels and body types. Each class starts sitting in a chair for some deep breathing and gentle stretching. This is followed by dynamic movement which leads to restorative relaxation on the floor. From there, your Sunday has begun.

Martha loves teaching this weekly class to friends and family around the world. It’s not only a great way to start the day, but also a wonderful way to stay connected regularly while sharing a common quest for health and wellness and fun.

'Explore Your Fusion' is an opportunity for you to experience gentle movements that will bring ease to the whole body. Starting with breath, moving into dynamic standing poses and continuing with explorations on the floor, these workshops aim to help each participant gain tools to help themselves feel better. Each workshop will begin with an introduction and end with a group Q&A and discussion period.

NEW: Fusion Forum

This (FREE!) online opportunity will help build awareness around how people with fusions can find ways to help themselves as they age. Facilitated by Martha Carter, each Forum will feature a couple of ‘fusioneers’ with impactful stories and learning to share, and finishes with a Q&A.

ABOUT STACY JOYCE
Stacy specializes in yoga for people with scoliosis and spinal fusion. She underwent an 11-vertebrae spinal fusion with Harrington rods at 16 years old in 1994. Two years later she discovered yoga as a means to reconnect with her body after years of pain, recovery, and bracing. In 2012 she learned about Yoga for Scoliosis & Fusions, and began studying with Deborah Wolk. Stacy completed Elise Browning Miller’s Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer program in 2020. Her mission is to share her expertise and help those with spinal fusions discover the holistic benefits of yoga.

ABOUT MARTHA CARTER
Martha is a therapeutic movement specialist for scoliosis and spinal fusions, offering classes, workshops, and retreats in Gentle Yoga and Somatics. Synthesizing her knowledge as a dance artist with her love of therapeutic methods, she guides participants to discover increased strength, length, alignment, and mindfulness in the whole soma—body, mind and soul. Her welcoming approach is accessible to all levels and abilities. Martha is a certified teacher of both Yoga for Scoliosis based on the teachings of Elise Browning Miller, and Essential Somatics™ based on the work of Thomas Hanna. She has also studied Energy Medicine and Trauma Release techniques, which she weaves into all her classes to help participants with pain relief while enhancing their movement potential. Martha is the founder and director of Twisted Outreach Project for Back Care and Scoliosis (TOPS), a Canadian-based non-profit that provides a range of holistic and creative approaches to working with back care and scoliosis. Finding Center: EXPLORING the plumb line of the asymmetrical body - WITH DEBORAH WOLK

ABOUT THE RETREAT
In this workshop, Deborah will define common ideas of the midline and the plumb line as well as explore Eastern ideas of an energetic center through anatomy, asana and pranayama.  Furnished with this information students will learn how to better balance a personal feeling of center by repatterning brain patterns, the occulo-motor system and improving movement patterns in order to create more efficient breath patterns and energy.

In this workshop, immersed in the quiet of OHM, the forest and the sea, participants will address some of these common scoliotic issues:

  • Center of gravity

  • Ocular-motor dysfunction 

  • Difficulties with proprioception

  • Difficulties with balance

  • Gait and functional leg length issues

  • And more!

ABOUT DEBORAH WOLK
Deborah Wolk, C-IAYT, has been teaching and working with students with back issues, scoliosis, and other injuries for over two decades. Her yoga practice working with her own scoliosis informs the work she does to help others.

Deborah met Bobbie Fultz in 2000—her first Yoga & Scoliosis teacher. She later met Elise Browning Miller and was certified as a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer through Elise’s training program in 2005. Her primary teacher is Genny Kapuler, whose class she assisted for 10 years, and she has also studied extensively with Kevin Gardiner in NYC (now in Budapest) and Donald Moyer in Berkeley, among others. In 2007, Deborah travelled to India to study with the Iyengar family and spent most afternoons observing the medical classes there. Also in 2007, she co-founded Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis and co-directed it for 8 years. In January 2015, Deborah founded Samamkaya Yoga Back Care & Scoliosis Collective. Samamkaya is a democratically run workers cooperative and is devoted exclusively to scoliosis, back care, teacher education in therapeutics, and adaptive yoga for students with disabilities and nervous system disorders.

Deborah’s teachings are based in the principles of Iyengar style yoga and Body Mind Centering (BMC) techniques. She is warm and funny and her teachings are subtle yet explained at a level everyone can understand. Deborah teaches workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings on Back Care & Scoliosis in New York City, across the US, and around the world, and has a thriving private practice.


 

‘Back in balance: Finding physical and mental balance with curves, twists, and fusions’ retreat

ABOUT CLAUDIA KATHERINE
Claudia is a Scoliosis Coach who helps people around the world feel confident in their curves, whilst helping them to slow progression and reduce scoliosis-related pain. She has her own severe three curve scoliosis so understands what mental and physical toll it can take on our mind and body. She has 6 years experience working as a Personal Trainer and Yoga Teacher in high end gyms and studios around London and Vancouver. During her time in the fitness industry, she noticed the scoliosis world was lacking trainers and yoga teachers who could understand her and her clients' curves, so she took matters into her own hands.

In summer of 2022, Claudia attended our TOPS Yoga, Scoliosis, and the Nervous System: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic retreat with teacher Deborah Wolk on Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada. Soon after that she completed her Yoga for Scoliosis certification with Elise Browning Miller and, in 2023, she completed Module 1 and 2 of Scolio-Pilates with Karina Tek. Claudia was also a teaching assistant to Martha Carter at our TOPS 2023 Soothing Somatics for Bad Backs retreat in Mexico AND Claudia and Martha have co-taught the Feel Good Twisted Weekend retreat together twice now, in fall 2023 and 2024!

ABOUT THE RETREAT
This immersive retreat includes 4 days and 3 nights in oceanside cabin accommodations, wonderful meals, walking paths, and beautiful nature at the shore. 

The retreat will include an intro evening lecture Friday, somatic movement classes Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning, and discussions. It is a 'learning laboratory' for improving scoliosis, asymmetrical posture, and the issues that come with it. 

This year's retreat will address the whole torso, deep to the spine, and out to the extremities, and will highlight the upper torso, rib cage, shoulders, arms, hands, neck, facial muscles and jaw. If you have chronic pain or issues in these areas, they will be well addressed with these effective self-care techniques. This retreat is perfect for people wanting an immersion experience in this delicious work, and also for teachers and practitioners interested in learning more. Audio recordings of movement class material, divided into sections, will be included so that you can continue your learning process at home.

ABOUT LAURA M GATES
Laura M Gates, CHSE, CCSE, is a certified (Hanna) clinical somatic educator ('07), practitioner of the hands on work, and member of the training team at Essential Somatics LLC, USA. Somatics in the tradition of the late neuromuscular pioneer, Thomas Hanna Phd, is her passion. She has developed strategies particularly helpful for scoliosis, fusion, and other postural issues including movement patterns and rich imagery. She brings her years as a former professional dancer, dance educator, and visual artist to her teaching.
