In our April Newsletter, we launched a Fusion Q&A series. Every month since, Martha has answered an anonymous question about scoliosis fusions.

QUESTION: Can you still do sit-ups after fusion surgery?

Most people with spinal fusion find sit-ups difficult as the fused spine limits flexibility. Instead, it is recommended to explore other exercises to keep the core strong.

Movements to consider include ‘plank pose’ (known in yoga as Kumbhakasana), or the classic Pilates mat exercise called 'the hundred'. Both are great examples of abdominal strengtheners that do not require a flexible spine.
