In our April Newsletter, we launched a Fusion Q&A series. Every month since, Martha has answered an anonymous question about scoliosis fusions.

QUESTION: What is 'Somatics for Spinal Fusion' — and how can it help me?

ANSWER: I've tried yoga, pilates, and gyrotonics.
I have explored massage, acupuncture, and physiotherapy.
I learned meditation, breathing techniques, and energy medicine.
Every approach has value, but I have learned with my fussy fused spine—and the accompanying pain, stiffness, and spasms—that not everything works all the time.

When I discovered the technique called Somatics, based on the teachings of philosopher and movement theorist, Thomas Hanna, I immediately recognized it as the most helpful approach for fused spines that I have ever encountered. Similar to yoga, Somatics is a very gentle movement system that is easy for all levels and abilities.

People with fusions are STIFF. The spine is meant to allow for ease in twisting, reaching, and bending. Instead, ours have been torqued and braced and fused and rendered immobile - so the body has to figure out other ways to move. Over the years, these accommodations will always cause chronic muscle imbalances, leading to spasms and pain from unconscious tension patterns. Unfortunately, this means that ‘fusioneers' often injure themselves - even while doing simple activities. It sometimes feels safer to minimize activity, but that is not a helpful long-term strategy as it can cause atrophy, weakness, and loss of body confidence.

Learning the simple ‘somatic' way to release the extra tension and stiffness is a gift. As the body becomes more supple, it becomes stronger and more confident. With this in mind, Somatics offers an excellent foundational approach that supports all other activities, sports, and movement techniques—for all bodies, and especially for those with fusions.

“I loved it. When you talk to us, it is just like we are there with you. And I say that with one year of Zoom experience at this point. You are sincere and sharing, and automatically it makes one feel like they are in the right space. Finally, someone who they can identify with, and a very optimistic look at what might be possible. ... And your terminology is easy for all to understand. I congratulate you on doing all of this while not even in person. Wow! I can only imagine what it would be like to be in your studio.” — Carole M, 2021 Somatic Yoga for Fusions participant

“Today, when we were moving our ribs on the diagonal, I felt a wave of emotion rush over me and an appreciation for my crooked spine, which despite its curves has served me well over my lifetime.” — 2020 Somatics Participant
